Biography of Gustave Eiffel

G.Eiffel was born on the 15 december 1832 in Dijon ; his father Francois-Alexandre was soldier in the imperial cavalry at the husards ‘s regiment and his mother Catherine-Melanie managed the wood ‘s firm of her parents. He had two sisters : Laure Alexendrine and Marie. His name Eiffel was a nickname, his true name was Alexandre Gustave Bonickausen.

He lived Turgot’s street in Dijon during all his childhood, educated by nurses and after by his grandmother because his mother was bringing back money for the family. In this street, he met a scientist, an alchemist, a workshop of dressmakers, a room of gymnastique (he made fencing up to 80 years.), a waste ground for a material depot of contractors. and his uncle Mollerat, chemist and republican.

Gustave Eiffel begun his study in school of district, after he went to the College Royal in Dijon for his secondary studies. He was extremely in the littary disciplines, he had two baccalaureats (letters and sciences). In 1852, he fails the oral examination to enter at the Polytechnic school ; then he went to a Central school of Arts and Manufactures. He left graduate on August 13th, 1855 there (13th out of 80) in so much chemical engineer.

  After a few years spent in the south-west of France, where he supervised in particular the works on important railroad bridge of Bordeaux, he installed on his account in 1864 as contractor specialized in the metal frames. In 1867, he created the workshops of steel construction of Levallois.Twenty years later he built the Eiffel tower for the Universal Exhibition of 1889.

The study of wind resistance took a dominating place ; The Eiffel tower had to bring the builder to use it for experiences and to base a laboratory there.After the end of his entreprenor career marked by failure of Panama Canal, Eiffel pursued an active life, occupied by experimental scientific researches on meteorology, the radiotelegraphy and the aerodynamic.

  He died in Paris on December 27th, 1923.
